“Let me do it again”. That is the common response of people using the Herman Digital Trainer. The HDT is an
electronic device that uses accelerometers to measure the force of a strike. Each sensor contains 2 accelerometers, which is the same device used in motor vehicles to trigger air bags. The HDT uses two accelerometers per
sensor, which allows the device to measure the impact of a strike on all 3 axes. Sensors measure the power of an impact in g forces. The HDT doubles the g force to calculate a score. The sensors communicate the data to
the HDT by a cable or wireless connection. The HDT can also be used to measure response time and number of strikes.

The genius of this product is twofold. The HDT is a small, portable device that operates ontwo AA batteries and can be usedwith any striking target. The sensors are attached by Velcro and can be easy transferred from one piece of gear to another. Earlier attempts at similar products developed by other companies were built directly
into a single piece of equipment like a shield or heavy bag, which greatly reduced the versatility of
training.

The second innovation is the use of software programs that allow the HDT to run a single user or
group through various exercises.These software programs were very well designed and can be
used to develop a number of different attributes and skills. The programs also track performance and can be used in
conjunction with a laptop to keep records. You can download preexisting programs anytime from the product website or request a custom program.

The HDT is extremely valuable because it motivates students to perform better. Training can be very taxing, both mentally and physically. Even the best of students can lose their edge overtime. The HDT gives feedback in the form of tangible scores, which drives users to achieve more. This can change the attitude from “I’m glad that exercise is over” to “Let me do it again”, which is the universal response that I have witnessed. This shift in mental focus alone is more than worth the price. It transforms training from work to fun and increases ability, which can help to save lives.

It should be noted that the HDT is not a load cell, which measures pressure per scare inch. The HDT measures the effect of your strike by measuring the movement of the target when it is hit.

The HDT website also offers a two DVD set titled “Fit To Defend”, which provides four one-hour self-defense lessons. The production quality is excellent and the price is extremely reasonable. The lessons present a conventional approach to self-defense and training.
